Unplug with Lior Frenkel
As part of a new feature of the National Day of Unplugging blog, we will be asking industry leaders and innovators a few questions about unplugging. Enjoy!
1. How did you get involved in Unplugging?
I’m the founder of UNDIGITIZE.ME
- a social project, designed to raise awareness for Smartphone addiction.
I speak at bars, cafes, high-schools and summits around the world, we created a great pictures campaign
, featured on Wired Magazine
, covered in the Israeli TV… it went quite viral.
Our next big thing is a children’s book called “Planet Earth Kids Club.” I’m creating the book with a psychotherapist specializing in anxiety disorders and ADHD. It’s for kids (and parents) who are addicted to screens. We created a crowdfunding project on Indiegogo – you are welcome to come help us with creating a better world for our kids
2. What do you do when you unplug?
I’m an entrepreneur so I need to be creative and innovative. The best way to do that is to daydream, and let your mind sort things out. So I unplug to daydream.
3. What is the most overrated piece of modern technology?
I really love technology so it’s hard for me to answer. I guess these days it would be the Smart TV. Getting apps into the TV, trying to hook people even more than they are – this is just wrong.
4. Do you make unplugging a regular practice? If so, How?
Yup. I do several things. For example, I have a reminder every few hours to do the 7-4-5 breathing technique. I unplug and just breath deeply and slowly, it’s like meditation – gets you so much more focused and relaxed. So I’m actually more productive by unplugging, than by being 24/7 plugged in.
5. Any plans for the next NDU?
Bring it to Israel!
6. If you could unplug and spend with one person for an hour, who would it be and what would you do?
I would love to spend an hour with Steve Jobs. This guy wanted to create amazing products, but he wasn’t quite aware to what he turned us into. So I would love to brainstorm with him about how to create amazing products, but without the addiction. Unfortunately, I will have to wait till there’s a time machine for that.
